Going into last night's game against the Anaheim Ducks, there's no way Habs fans couldn't be happy with the previous three games their team had faced on the road.

A win against the Boston Bruins on Tuesday included 4 unanswered third period goals and a good team game to bring the Canadiens to a 4-1 victory against their most immediate Eastern Conference rival. This was the proverbial ''must win'' for the Canadiens, and everyone delivered.

The National Hockey League has suspended Montreal Canadiens forward Maxime Lapierre for four games for hitting San Jose forward Scott Nichol early in the third period during last night's game. While no penalty was assessed on the hit itself in-game, the hit was late and unnecessary, as Nichol had already followed through with the hit.

While Nichol left the game with a shoulder injury after the hit, the extent of his injuries remain unknown pending an MRI.

UPDATE: TSN and Bob McKenzie are reporting that Ponikarovski to the pens for Luca Caputi and Martin Skoula is a done deal pending the trade call to the NHL. Skoula might be flipped tomorrow before the deadline, and Caputi could play for the Leafs as soon as possible.

Bob McKenzie and TSN are reporting that a deal could be in place between Toronto and Pittsburgh this evening.

James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail is reporting that Nick Boynton has been traded to the Chicago Blackhawks for future considerations from the Anaheim Ducks.

Boynton will be immediately sent to the Rockford IceHogs of the AHL. The former 1st round pick defenseman has 1 goal and 6 assists in 42 games with the Ducks, as well as 4 assists in 9 games with the Manitoba Moose.

It seems like it's been forever since the Montreal Canadiens took the ice. Frankly, I'm fairly certain a lot of Habs fans would like to forget their final outings before the break, a home-and-away series with the Philadelphia Flyers that ended disastrously.

Sportsnet is reporting that the Atlanta Thrashers have signed defenseman Chris Chelios to an NHL contract. Chelios has been playing with the Thrashers AHL affiliate, the Chicago Wolves, accumulating 5 goals and 16 assists in 44 games.

In the second major move of the day, TSN has announced that Matt Stajan, recently acquired in the Dion Phaneuf deal from Toronto, will be staying in Calgary.

Stajan signed a 4 year extension, which raises his salary to about $3.5 million from the $1.75 million he was making on his previous deal. Stajan would have been an unrestricted free agent on July 1st.

The 26 year old, 6'1'' 200lbs center has 18 goals and 27 assists with a -1 rating this season.
