It’s almost a month since the Vancouver Canucks were eliminated from the Stanley Cup Playoff’s, the dust has settled and everyone and their Auntie have analyzed and over analyzed what went wrong. The players may now even be more concerned with how they will get a birdie on the eighteenth hole then anything pertaining to the ice. For Mike Gillis and his Management team its still business as usual. Gillis and his colleagues are left with the job of righting the ship.

Now that Ryan Kesler has been awarded a contract extension, the position of first and second line center will be filled for at least the next six years. So what about the role of third line centre, who could be the best candidate for that job?

Kyle Wellwood currently fills that spot. On July 1st he will become a UFA. This season has been rather inconsistent for Wellwood, he has found it difficult to continue the success from last season that saw him score a career high 18 goals, to date he has a total of 11 goals.

The passing of time can often be a cruel occurrence, on March 15th Canucks.com proudly reported that Mikael Samuelsson had been named the NHL’s first star of the week, for the week of 8-14 March. During that time Samuelsson accrued some impressive stats, ten points six goals and four assists in four games. Then on 17th March the site reports that Samuelsson will miss at least two – three weeks with an upper body injury. In seventy games the Canucks RW has a total of thirty goals placing him second in that category for team stats, he also has fifty-three points.

On January 30th the Vancouver Canucks started what was to be the longest road trip in NHL history. During this time they traveled a total of 20,737 kilometers. The first game of the colossal fourteen game expedition began with a win against the Leafs, it ended on March 10th with an overtime loss to Phoenix. In a span of fourteen games the team finished with a respectable 8-5-1 record, the final outcome of this journey could have ended much worse, especially when you consider that Vancouver have been playing without two of it’s best defensemen.

In recent years Vancouver has become notorious for it’s lack of activity at the trade deadline. Last year Mike Gillis opted to do absolutely nothing, a year earlier Matt Pettinger was the sole acquisition. Yesterday was also a relatively quiet affair with only three deals made.

Leading up to the deadline the Canucks had some issues that needed to be addressed, the primary concern was to add extra depth on defense due to the injuries to Bieksa and Mitchell.
