The Ilya Kovalchuk contract is by far the most insulting to the NHL's current CBA. After fans suffered a year-off from hockey for the 2003-04 season, it seems it was all for nothing.

It seems that San Jose Sharks goaltender Evgeni Nabokov has become a victim of the salary cap era - it's a much nicer way of saying teams have no interest in paying over $5M per season to a small, 34-year-old goalie who didn't have enough talent or clutch characteristics to take some of the best San Jose Sharks rosters the NHL has ever seen to the Stanley Cup.

TSN confirms the goaltender signed a six-year deal worth $2

The Chicago Blackhawks have swung a trade with the Atlanta Thrashers in which Andrew Ladd would be the focal point of the deal. Ladd is an RFA and the Chicago Blackhawks are still trying to find a way to keep their core together under the salary cap.

The New Jersey Devils have signed defenceman Anton Volchenkov to a six-year contract worth 4.25M per season with a NTC. In 64 games with the Ottawa Senators last season, Volchenkov proved to continue to be an effective shut down defenceman who was never afraid to block shots. He also posted 4 goals and 14 points on the year. He certainly fits the mold of the New Jersey Devils system.

The Atlanta Thrashers have signed free agent goaltender Chris Mason to a two-year deal. He spent the season in St. Louis and posted a 0.913 SV% in the process. He inks for two-years at 1.6M and 2.1M.

The Vancouver Canucks have signed defenceman Dan Hamhuis. The 27-year-old Smithers, BC native scored 5 goals and 24 points last season with the Nashville Predators. With Paul Martin and Sergei Gonchar signing early in the day, Hamhuis became the focal point around the league and the Canucks have won that bidding war. The Canucks have added Hamhuis and Ballard since draft day.

The Phoenix Coyotes have signed veteran free agent Ray Whitney to a two-year deal worth 3M per season. In 80 games with the Carolina Hurricanes last season, Whitney scored 21 goals and 58 points, leading many teams to pitch for his services in a secondary scoring role.

The Toronto Maple Leafs made a splash today, signing forward Colby Armstrong to a three-year contract worth 9M. Armstrong played 79 games last year scoring 15 goals and 29 points with 61 penalty minutes. The Leafs add more grit and physical presence to their lineup with this signing.

Just looking at the information floating around. Mapleleafs twitter releases rumour of "Bozak, Kulemin and Kaberle for 1st overall and high salaried player." That, in itself, is crazy. But I would have called the Phaneuf trade insane if someone had suggested it prior to it happening.
