The National Hockey League has said not so fast to both the New Jersey Devils and Ilya Kovalchuk. The NHL has rejected Kovalchuk's 17-year contract worth $102 million on the grounds that it circumvents the league salary cap.

No further details have been released yet.

For the second consecutive season, the Vancouver Canucks and Chicago Blackhawks will meet in the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Last year was a thrilling and hard fought series that saw the young Blackhawks team prevail in six games. The Canucks will no doubt be looking for vengeance particularly because of how they were eliminated.

It was not easy by any means, but the Vancouver Canucks are moving on to the second round of the NHL Playoffs for the third time in four years. The young Los Angeles Kings, spearheaded by stud defenseman Drew Doughty, threw everything the could at the Canucks and came close to pulling off the upset.

Vancouver opened the series with a 3-2 overtime win at G.M. Place. It was a see saw affair that the Canucks managed to pull off. Game two started well for Vancouver who jumped to an early 2-0 lead only to give that up in the second.

Sheldon Souray had some harsh words for the Edmonton Oilers management and has requested a trade. The defenseman has been injury riddled since joining Edmonton and now joins the growing list of players who have either refused to sign a contract in Edmonton or has demanded a trade. Souray, who spoke with Sportsnet, expressed that his discontent was strictly on the management in Edmonton and not the city nor its fans.

[QUOTE]"I want a trade."

"I do," Souray repeated, sounding a little disappointed at the admission. "Yes, I do want a trade."

"It’s not a players thing.

With the 2009-2010 NHL regular season coming to a close, it is time to look ahead to the playoffs. Plenty remained at stake on the final day, notably between the Philadelphia Flyers and New York Rangers. The stakes were simple, win and you're in. And the Flyers did just that in dramatic fashion. The game ended up going to a shootout with Philadelphia prevailed. The win jumped the Flyers into 7th overall while Montreal fell to 8th.
