The Leafs made a deal on the eve of the UFA frenzy which sent Stalberg, Didomenico, and Paradis to the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for Kris Versteeg and the rights to Billy Sweatt. Most Leaf fans, myself included, knew little to nothing about Billy Sweatt, apparently a speedy winger who was selected in the second round back in 2007.

It has been a forgone conclusion for quite some time now that Tomas Kaberle would be traded in the summer window that we are currently in, one in which Kaberle’s no-movement clause has been lifted for a month. It has also been a forgone conclusion that dealing Kaberle for another top-six forward will immediately improve the team. Well I’m sorry to burst your bubble Leafs Nation, but neither of those may be true.

Right now Stan Bowman probably feels like a snow plow just pushed snow onto his drive way right after he finished shoveling it. After clearing out what seemed to be enough cap space by trading away Versteeg, Byfuglien, Ladd and Sopel, the San Jose Sharks signed the Blackhawks' restricted free agent defenseman, Niklas Hjalmarsson to an offer sheet. So what does this all have to do with the Leafs?

It's that time of year again, the heart of the NHL's offseason sandwiched in between the draft and the start of free agency. If there's one thing we know about free agency it's that there will be overpayment. 3rd liners will be payed like 1st liners and 1st liners will be paid like CEO's. The only problem is that there are not that many 1st line players to go around, not nearly enough to fill the voids on many teams.

It's pretty obvious that Gary Bettman wanted to be in and out of Philadelphia pretty quick. Considering that Philly fans once booed Santa Claus, I don't think Bettman wanted to stick around and see what was in store for him. But the NHL did go to Philly last night, where they awarded the coveted Stanley Cup, and you know you're in Philly when...

This year something happened that left me scratching my head and really questioning the current CBA. The Atlanta Thrashers were forced to trade their franchise player, Ilya Kovalchuk in the midst of their own attempts to make the playoffs. The reason being of course that the Thrashers were unable to get him under contract for next season before the trade deadline and were not willing to take the risk of negotiating with him after the deadline where they could lose him for nothing come July 1st. To make it clear, I understand why the Thrashers had to do what they did, but I just don't see how this is good for the NHL, especially for struggling franchises like the Atlanta Thrashers.

Ask many fans these days who think they know more than NHL executives themselves and most of them will tell you that the blueprint to build a winning team is through the draft. Well looking at these remaining eight teams, I'd say that there is no blueprint, as the evidence is inconclusive.

I'm supposed to be getting Leaf fans ready for the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, but for obvious reasons, that won't be happening. Other than Burke's hour long state of the union address and the signing of goaltender Jussi Rynnas out of Finland, there hasn't really been a whole lot coming out of Leafland.

While the amount of teams renting has gone down over the last couple of years, some teams are still shelling out a ton of assets for a few months of service. As GM's assess damage suffered by other teams in recent history due to the excessive cost of rent, the amount of gambling at the NHL trade deadline has visibly diminished. But this season, Lou Lamoriello ventured back to a place where all those before him have failed. But he couldn't resist the temptation to add one of the game's most accurate snipers to his lineup, so he took the bait and gave up a large chunk of his savings to rent the player he so desired. And just like all those before him, he comes out of this battered and bruised.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic This nightmare doesn't involve a serial killer that gets you in your dreams, but it's one that has haunted Leaf fans all season long, both awake and sleeping. As if the season itself wasn't already a nightmare, tonight the Leafs and their fans will finally know whether or not this bad situation will either remain as is, turn into the worst case scenario, or possibly provide a little relief. Tonight could have been exciting for Leaf fans, instead it has turned into unbearable pain.
