The Leafs made a deal on the eve of the UFA frenzy which sent Stalberg, Didomenico, and Paradis to the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for Kris Versteeg and the rights to Billy Sweatt. Most Leaf fans, myself included, knew little to nothing about Billy Sweatt, apparently a speedy winger who was selected in the second round back in 2007.

It has been a forgone conclusion for quite some time now that Tomas Kaberle would be traded in the summer window that we are currently in, one in which Kaberle’s no-movement clause has been lifted for a month. It has also been a forgone conclusion that dealing Kaberle for another top-six forward will immediately improve the team. Well I’m sorry to burst your bubble Leafs Nation, but neither of those may be true.

Right now Stan Bowman probably feels like a snow plow just pushed snow onto his drive way right after he finished shoveling it. After clearing out what seemed to be enough cap space by trading away Versteeg, Byfuglien, Ladd and Sopel, the San Jose Sharks signed the Blackhawks' restricted free agent defenseman, Niklas Hjalmarsson to an offer sheet. So what does this all have to do with the Leafs?

It's that time of year again, the heart of the NHL's offseason sandwiched in between the draft and the start of free agency. If there's one thing we know about free agency it's that there will be overpayment. 3rd liners will be payed like 1st liners and 1st liners will be paid like CEO's. The only problem is that there are not that many 1st line players to go around, not nearly enough to fill the voids on many teams.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic This nightmare doesn't involve a serial killer that gets you in your dreams, but it's one that has haunted Leaf fans all season long, both awake and sleeping. As if the season itself wasn't already a nightmare, tonight the Leafs and their fans will finally know whether or not this bad situation will either remain as is, turn into the worst case scenario, or possibly provide a little relief. Tonight could have been exciting for Leaf fans, instead it has turned into unbearable pain.

Kaberle shows his true colours having the audacity to shake that man's hand while playing for this team.

Seeing how the only good thing to come out of Toronto in recent memory is Drake, it doesn't really take much to get a thank you these days. So even with this abomination that is the Leafs' season coming to a close, I still managed to muster up some thank you's to send them off.

This isn't about the villain in an upcoming horror flick, but Leafs' netminder Jonas Gustavsson has lived up to his billing during the last stretch of the season. He won't get you in your dreams, but you better be wide awake if you want to have any success against this rejuvenated monster. It's almost as if since the trade that rocked this city, someone has hit the reset button on this kid. Unfortunately, there was no reset button on the Leafs' season.

Prior to the NHL Lockout, Toronto was the only city where Leafs would fall in the spring. But post-lockout, the Leafs seem to have gone back to their roots and only begin to bud in spring. That would be great if the NHL season coincided with the spring and summer seasons, but unfortunately it doesn't.

Believe it or not, but it's been 43 days since the trades that rocked this city. 43 days ago, the face of this franchise underwent a big face lift, and in my opinion, they're better for it. I'll always remember jumping out of bed as my brain desperately tried to comprehend the text message I had received from TSN notifying me that Dion Phaneuf had been traded to the Maple Leafs. I was very excited and I still am. I've never seen a Leafs team this young, it's a nice change. A lot of things have changed with this team this season, but the most important change has been the attitude.

The biggest change in this team over the last six years has been age. Six years ago, the Leafs were well on their way to what fans thought might be a successful post-season. By the end of the 2003-2004 season, the Leafs were deploying the likes of Mats Sundin, Gary Roberts, Alex Mogilny, Joe Nieuwendyk, Ron Francis, Brian Leetch, Owen Nolan and Ed Belfour. Six years later, times have changed.
