If the Islanders were looking to make a statement, tonight was the night. If the Isles were looking to prove that they were due for a win on the road as they have lost their last seven road games in a row, tonight was the night. If the Isles really wanted to end a 14-game losing streak against the Philadelphia Flyers, tonight was the night. If the Isles wanted to win in an arena other than Madison Square Garden that belonged to their Atlantic Division rivals, tonight was the night.

I guess they didn't want any of these things as much as say, I wanted them too.

With the exception of the Stanley Cup playoffs, this time of year is without a doubt the most fun time of the season for any hockey fan and/or blogger. Although those games are intense and fun to watch, the anticipation involved in deadline deals and rumor swapping on the web is filled up with so much hype and intrigue that many fans consider it a personal holiday.

So far the Islanders have dealt the 6'6 defenseman, Andy Sutton to the Ottawa Senators for a 2nd round pick. Like the Comrie/Campoli deal, the pick involved was originally San Jose's, making this a late second round selection.

Rick DiPietro is out indefinitely with swelling of his left knee and was unable to practice this morning at Syosset as a result.

Check out my article at The Hockey Writers to read up all about it!

I purposely did not put an "equals" sign at the end of that equation for two reasons. One - I was never good at math and definitely do not plan on solving it or using any algorithm's where I can substitute numbers to come up with an answer; Two - because the end result is yet to be determined, and although DP and KO are not part of this year's winter Olympics, I still hope to see USA achieve gold.

Many Islander fans were hoping to see Kyle Okposo make the USA Olympic roster this year.

The Islanders have gone 2-9-0 in their past 11 games heading into the Olympic break, lowering their spot in the standings to a disappointing 13th seed with 58 points, trailing the 8th place Montreal Canadiens by 6 points while only maintaining 3-point lead over the Carolina Hurricanes.

"It would have definitely been more enjoyable if we had a bunch of wins before the break," said defenseman Andy Sutton after the Valentine's Day show-down with the Ottawa Senators.

Hello everyone,

Today I will be doing another live blog from the NYI Blog Box in section 201 at Nassau Coliseum as the Islanders play host to the Ottawa Senators. The Isles will be playing after an exciting 5-4 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning yesterday afternoon in which they trailed twice, both in the first and second periods. The Senators had a rough start to the season but suddenly went on fire and are now 5th in the East, one point behind the Pittsburgh Penguins. They too played yesterday, having lost on the road to the Detroit Red Wings 4-1.

Hey everyone! Today I will be doing my first live blog from the NYI Blog Box for The Checking Line. This afternoon at 2PM the Islanders will be hosting the Tampa Bay Lightning, a team that has been climbing the Eastern Conference standings while the Islanders are fighting for a chance to survive to the end of the season for their first playoff berth in years.

Check back a little before 2PM and feel free to leave questions and comments throughout the game!

First Period:

18:03 - First period has started. Sorry for the delay folks.

An Islander forward last night, making his NHL debut, had an immediate impact with each shift he took in the Islanders first win in the past 8 games. Could it have been a case of first-time nerves and adrenaline working it's magic to help the youngster provide the spark this team needs? Possibly. But what we might also be seeing is the toughness and grit this team has lacked all season long, and if his game stays at the same level of intensity that it was played at last night, he may stick around for a while.

Seven losses in a row, folks. That's how many consecutive games the Islanders have surrendered to their opponents in a stretch where they have only scored nine goals. Secondary scoring has always been an issue with this team, but when the top guys of Tavares, Okposo and Moulson aren't getting the job done, and Josh Bailey is on the Injured Reserve, this team will really struggle to find the back of the net.

And you can add to the fact that Rick DiPietro is still several games away from returning to old form. That doesn't mean Ricky is responsible for the Islanders recent struggles.

As a member of the NYI Blog Box, I have the privilege of attending Islander home games with media credentials that grant me access to the post-game press-conferences and interviews. Here I am allowed to ask the coach a question as well as interviewing any player in the locker room.

However, today I had the opportunity to have a one-on-one interview with John Tavares after the morning skate at Nassau Coliseum with some questions I had prepared ahead of time.
