Pregame for 3/24/13: Islanders take on Panthers at home
In the finale of this recent homestand, the Islanders look to salvage two points after going 0-3 so far. Their futility at home has been consistently troubling and their 5-11-2 record leaves fans scratching their head.
If they are to miss the playoffs in the shortened 2013 season, they can look to their play at home as the reason why. They have collected only 12 of a possibly 36 points at the Nassau Coliseum all season.
Despite all of this, the Islanders remain only 3 points out of a playoff spot. In order to make any sort of legimiate run towards the postseason, the Islanders have to fatten up their record against teams like the bottom dwelling Panthers.
It has been an awful season thus far for the Florida Panthers and they have had little to cheer for. They sit in dead last with a record of 9-17-6 and an NHL worst 24 points.
Despite their record, the Islanders have to be careful not to let the main cogs for the Panthers burn them on Sunday. Leading scorers, Thomas Kopecky and Jonathan Huberdeau have shown an ability to find the back of the net.
The Islanders will look to their usual offensive threats in Matt Moulson and John Tavares to feast on a vulnerable Florida defense.
As the Islanders take the ice on Sunday, they need to realize that time is running out to make a run. They are lucky to still be in the hunt despite all of their troubles. With only a handful of games remaining, now is the time to make an upward transition in the standings.
