If there ever was a night to crack open an Iron City, eat a few pierogies and make some of Mama Malkin's Borscht , tonight is the night.
The Penguins take on the Capitals in D.C. in one of the most hyped regular season games in some time. It takes place 10 days before the two teams square off in an even more hyped regular season game on New Year's Day.
Oh yea and the 6 time Super Bowl Champion Steelers play tonight too.
More than a few Iron City's will be downed in the Steel City.......
The Capitals seem to have steered the train back on the track, winning their last two games and ending a brutal 8 game losing streak. While Ovechkin has less goals than Nikolai Zherdev, Rene Bourque and Dustin Brown going into tonight's game, one thought is in the back of everyone's mind----Ovie will explode soon. If there ever was a night--with the bright lights on, at home and against a rival this is it. As Dexter would say "tonight is the night".
Yesterday in Pittsburgh the Penguins chased Panthers G Tomas Vokoun in the first period of their 5-2 win. Florida was coming off of a 5-0 victory over the Flyers in which Vokoun had a pretty good audition for the always revolving goaltending position in Philly.
After the Pens whipped Phoenix on Monday the Panthers game could be considered the very definition of a trap game. Sid and Malkin continued their streaks and Brent Johnson made a few key saves before leaving the game due to injury, and ho hum another 2 points before the showdown on Thursday.
Thoughts on 24/7
-Is it bad when you start looking forward to episodes more than games? That's how good it is. Kudos to HBO.
-Eric Godard jersey was ordered yesterday----just for the fact that he wore that red suit.
-Sid is superstitious.
-How many people are getting a new perspective on Matt Cooke's personality?
-It's not hard to see why Bylsma is so successful. There are those special people who command respect from peers and speak softly while carrying a big stick, he has those gifts.
-Seeing Mario on the ice again, what a rush.
After a slow start to the season Evgeni Malkin has his groove back, he now has a four-game point streak with 5 goals coming during the streak. All this has occurred since he took about 2 weeks off because of a knee injury. He has jumped from 50th in the league in scoring to 26th in the past four games
With Malkin back, accompanied by the dominance of Crosby and the emergence of the "Buzz Line", the Penguins can now roll three solid lines.
During the Penguins 12 game winning streak earlier this month Pittsburgh made due mainly with two lines. Facing a talented, deep team like Washington having Malkin kicking on all cylinders and three productive lines is a key factor.
It's a Hockey (and Football) Night in Pittsburgh
Get your cigars ready, Santa brings Pittsburgh two early presents---Steelers 27-6, Pens 4-3, Sid and Geno keep their streaks going.
Merry Puckmas to all and to all a Gordie Howe Hat Trick night!!!!!!
