Providing comprehensive hockey coverage for teams across the NHL; blogs, forums and much more!

Hi everybody

I'm new here, just wanted to make my presence known. Been a Ducks fan since their inception, the Leafs are my second team, Teemu Selanne my all time favorite player. Uh what else...I play defense when I play hockey...5 goals in a season is a lot for me...Mike Babcock is my fave NHL coach, and I belong to that small group of hockey fans who understands that Scott Niedermayer is no longer a good player.

I like this site because it seems like y'all have brains and a good sense of humor. Hello all.

Oh yeah, I hate the Stars, especially Mike Ribiero.
Considering this site is run by two habs fans, your hate for Mike Ribeiro certainly makes you welcome here Tongue

Welcome aboard man, always glad to meet enthusiastic hockey fans.
Haha yeah, I noticed the Habs-heavy stance on this site. As an Anaheim fan, I have the luxury of being neutral towards the Habs. When I do have opinion about them, it's always a general hockey thought rather than a "your team beat my team" kind of thing.

For example, I like the way the Habs tend to favor players with Francophonic names in their draft picks and in general. People always bitch about their French-Canadian bias, but shit, how many teams go out of their way to promote locals? I especially like the Canadiens' unrequieted love for Vinny Lecavalier. You're right he SHOULD be a Hab, dammit, and the fact that he won a cup does not excuse him for willingly wasting away in Florida.

I also think the whole Bob Gainey thing was interesting. He's one of the most tragic figures in sports. For starters, he's best friends with a guy who most west coast hockey fans can't stand: when Gauthier was GM in Anaheim the team had some of its most embarrassing years (and nobody has a more embarrassing, "Disney blessed" history than my team). Nobody really understood how big a cog Gauthier was in the hockey machine. He made lousy trades for us and didn't draft well, and--even worse--the team made the finals the year after he left, which made it look like he was the problem all along. Gainey, meanwhile, was in Dallas winning a cup with the hated Stars on the back of Brett Hull's illegal goal. After all the years these two spent in non-traditional markets where the only news was bad news, they goes "home" to Canada and share the most high-pressure job in the country. For Ducks fans who hate the Stars (there are a lot of us), this was "the idiot" and "the cheater" taking over the NHL's most glorious team. All they managed to do was have one good year ending in a crazy Bruins upset, and now Gainey pulls the plug and throws the whole thing on Gauthier? What a dick! Oh well, at least they still have Cammy, right? Oh shit, he blew his knee. Oh well, it's all Gauthier's problem now! Gainey is backing away from the team he "love[s] the most." To use some French Canadian lingo: the guy's a douche.
To be honest HS, I think Gauthier was as big a part of the problem as Gainey was over the years.

Since the beginning of his tenure with the team, a major problem has been pro scouting, a department which has been Gauthier's responsibility since 2003 (a.k.a. the lousy trades you mentioned). Since then, we've seen Assistant GM, GM, and vice president tacked onto his list of responsibilities. It's kind of crazy when you think about it. But still, i'm willing to give him a shot, since it is as much his team as it was Gainey's, except, obviously Gainey had the final say. Will he be as lousy as he was in Anaheim? In Ottawa? In Quebec? I don't know. Hell, I don't even feel comfortable analyzing what he did in those towns, because I wasn't there.

And as for Gainey? He has been on the outs for a while now, and I don't know whether it was the Molsons who kicked him out or whether it was really his decision, but the timing was really weird, especially after he decided to blow up the team last summer. Still, he wouldn't have lasted more than another half season, so I think it's just a matter of him quitting before he was fired, or quitting before he had to make any more decisions that went against the vision or direction of the Molsons.

But anyway, in the end, we basically still have the same GM... I guess we just have to accept it.

And again, it's nice to meet a Ducks fan. I don't know how far away we are from having a ducks blogger on the site, but we do have a good base of maybe 10 teams covered at the moment and that's growing, and i'm looking forward to seeing your perspective on various happenings around the league!
welcome aboard!
